Most of our elderly loved ones prefer to spend their golden years where they are most familiar. A survey from the AARP confirms as much, citing 3 out of 4 American older adults choosing to age in place.
We see this phenomenon firsthand in our home care in Fairfax, Virginia as well. But what exactly is driving these numbers? Why is a majority of seniors choosing to stay at home and not in a residential or group setting where they can socialize with their peers?
The answers can be attributed to more or less the following factors:
- Comfortability and familiarity Like anyone else, being in a familiar environment means feeling the safest and most secure. There is also the matter of knowing where exactly everything is which makes for the utmost convenience and peace of mind.
- Mobility difficulties You can always send your senior loved one to a facility assisted through a wheelchair or another mobility aid; however, this does not answer the issue of unfamiliarity and having to learn where to go and how things work in their new environment.
- Presence of a community Aside from their friends and families, your senior loved ones would have built a supportive environment, made connections, and established social circles through the years in their current community.
- Financial considerations Receiving senior care in Virginia at home will always be cheaper than in a residential facility because they would only be paying for the services they need.
For instance, they may only need personal care and not driving services or vice versa.
